The Real Cost of a $750 DIY Permanent Lighting System

One product comes in a box. The other comes with a company standing behind.

I had another Govee call over the weekend.

The caller owns a dental practice. As he explained what had happened to his permanent lights, he compared it to something he sees in his own business:

People sometimes choose the least-expensive dental work they can find, only to return later when something fails and needs to be repaired.

“Should have just done it right the first time,” he said.

He was not disappointed by what the lights could do. Quite the opposite.

He loved the effect.

For approximately $750, he had purchased a Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights Pro system and asked his gardener to install it. Once the lights were up, they looked great. He had color-changing effects for Christmas, other holidays, special occasions, and everyday accent lighting.

For about six months, they were awesome.

Then they started flickering.

Sections of the system began hanging down. The homeowner tried to troubleshoot it himself, but the lights were mounted high enough that his ladder barely allowed him to reach them. It was the same type of ladder the original installer had used to stretch up and staple the wires beneath the eaves.

By the time he called us, he knew all the Facebook terminology.

Sconce shadows. Flickering data. Power deficiencies. Bad connections. App resets.

He had learned a lot about permanent lighting, but he still had a damaged system dangling from his home.

What We Found

When we arrived for the onsite consultation, the actual problem was straightforward.

Part of the wire had been resting directly against a staple. The weight of the cord, combined with continued movement from the wind, had slowly worn through the wire’s protective coating.

Eventually, the internal wire became exposed. Moisture and corrosion followed, and the system began flickering.

It was not primarily an app problem.

It was not a mysterious programming problem.

It was a mounting, protection, and serviceability problem.

To be fair, Govee’s own product information describes an installation using VHB adhesive and mounting clips—not staples. Govee also describes the product as a DIY system and recommends consulting a professional when the homeowner cannot complete the installation safely.

The manufacturer had not told anyone to staple through—or even against—the wire.

But that is part of the larger point.

A product can be waterproof, app-controlled, and labeled “Pro” without automatically becoming a professionally installed permanent-lighting system.

A permanent system must be designed and installed so the wiring remains supported, concealed, protected, accessible, and serviceable for years—not simply attached wherever someone can reach with a ladder.


“Pro” Does Not Always Mean Professionally Supported

The homeowner repeatedly came back to the same point:

“But I bought the Pro version.”

The Pro model does offer upgraded features, weather protection, cuttable sections, warm and cool white lighting, and more installation flexibility than a basic consumer light strand.

But “Pro” describes the version of the product.

It does not necessarily describe the design, installation, access plan, workmanship, or local service structure surrounding that product.

Govee currently advertises a three-year warranty on its permanent outdoor lights and lifetime technology support. That is important, and it should be acknowledged.

But remote technology support is not the same service as having a local lighting contractor who can:

  • Inspect the installation onsite.

  • Safely reach the roofline.

  • Determine whether the failure involves power, data, wiring, connections, or physical damage.

  • Bring a lift or other access equipment when needed.

  • Remove and replace damaged components.

  • Correct the original installation problem.

  • Stand behind the completed system.

A replacement part may solve a product failure. It does not automatically solve the labor, access, installation, or workmanship problem that caused—or surrounds—the failure.

The most expensive part of a permanent-lighting problem often is not the individual light.

It is getting someone qualified back to the roofline, determining what failed, and repairing it correctly.

The Difference Between Buying a Product and Buying an Outcome

Consumer permanent-lighting systems have helped create a tremendous market.

Homeowners have seen what individually controlled, color-changing lights can do. They love being able to change their homes for Christmas, Halloween, birthdays, sporting events, patriotic holidays, and everyday architectural lighting.

The magic is real.

Where the experience often becomes more complicated is after the original purchase.

The consumer-retail model is built primarily around selling a product. When a covered product fails, the remedy may be troubleshooting assistance or replacement equipment.

That can be completely reasonable, but a replacement box delivered to the front door does not:

  • Remove the damaged system.

  • Provide a lift.

  • Correct improper mounting.

  • Recalculate power distribution.

  • Rebuild a damaged connection.

  • Refit a difficult corner.

  • Hide exposed wiring.

  • Reinstall the lights at the roofline.

  • Guarantee the workmanship.

That is how a $750 purchase can become far more expensive than its original price suggests.

This does not mean a consumer DIY system is wrong for everyone. A capable homeowner with an accessible, single-story roofline may be completely comfortable installing and maintaining one.

The mistake is assuming that every product marketed as “permanent lighting” provides the same finished result, warranty structure, serviceability, and long-term support.

It does not.



What This Homeowner Chose Instead

After reviewing the home and explaining the available options, the customer chose an OMNI under-eave lighting system.

OMNI created the downward architectural-lighting effect he originally liked about the Govee system, but it did so through a clean, professionally fitted aluminum track.

The wiring was concealed and protected.

There were no loose cords running across the underside of the eaves. There were no exposed wires hanging between lights. The track was custom-fitted around the home’s corners, transitions, rooflines, and architectural details.

Behind that cleaner daytime appearance was a professionally planned system that included:

  • Permanent powder-coated aluminum track.

  • Concealed and protected low-voltage wiring.

  • Properly designed power distribution.

  • Custom-fitted corners and transitions.

  • Planned controller and power-supply locations.

  • Safe installation and future service access.

  • App setup and system handoff.

  • Local contractor support.

  • Long-term warranty options.

The first improvement was visible before the lights were even turned on.

His roofline looked finished.

More importantly, he now knew who to call when the system needed service.

He did not simply purchase another set of lights. He purchased a professionally installed and serviceable part of his home.



What Does a Professional System Cost?

A professionally designed and installed system costs more up front. There is no reason to hide that.

As a general starting example, approximately 100 linear feet of basic OMNI under-eave lighting is often around $3,700, depending on the architecture, access, electrical conditions, and installation requirements.

That typically includes:

  • The transformer and system controls.

  • Permanent tracked wiring.

  • Low-voltage connections.

  • Custom fitting of the aluminum track.

  • Installation labor and access.

  • App setup.

  • A standard long-term warranty.

Our current OMNI program includes a standard 15-year warranty. A lifetime product warranty is available with the purchase of an annual service and maintenance package and may be transferred once to a new homeowner, subject to the written terms of the proposal and warranty.

A more involved home may require approximately 250 linear feet. A complete home wrap can approach 450 linear feet or more. That is why a legitimate proposal begins with an onsite consultation rather than an online price per box.

No, a professional system is not a $750 purchase.

It is also not the same deliverable.

One price buys lights in a box.

The other buys a designed installation, protected infrastructure, professional access, warranty coverage, serviceability, and a company that remains responsible after the installation is finished.


Questions to Ask Before Buying Permanent Lights

Before purchasing any permanent-lighting system, do not ask only how many colors it produces or how many scenes are included in the app.

Ask:

  1. How will every section of wiring be supported and protected?

  2. Who is designing the power and data distribution?

  3. What will the system look like during the daytime?

  4. What portions of the product, labor, and installation are covered by warranty?

  5. Who physically comes to the property when something starts flickering?

  6. Who pays for the ladder, lift, removal, and reinstallation?

  7. Will replacement parts still integrate cleanly with the original system?

Permanent lighting should provide permanent convenience—not a permanent troubleshooting project.


Start With a Consultation

The first step is understanding what the different types of permanent-lighting systems actually cost, how they are installed, and what warranties and service commitments stand behind them.

We will inspect your home, discuss the effect you want, explain the available systems, identify access and power requirements, and put the cost and warranty terms in writing.

You may decide that a DIY system is sufficient for your property.

You may decide that a professionally tracked system is the better long-term investment.

Either way, it is much better to understand the difference before the lights are installed 25 feet above the ground.
