The Lifecycle of Christmas Lights: From Joy to Waste

Quick answer: Most store-bought Christmas lights last a few seasons before broken bulbs, tangled strands or failed sections send them to the trash. A full-service program works like a rental instead: we supply commercial-grade LED lights, repair them during the season, take them down and store them between seasons, so homeowners never buy, store or throw away a strand.
Every holiday season starts with a box of lights and ends with a decision: pack them up again, or throw out the strands that stopped working. Here is what happens to Christmas lights over their life, and the alternative.

The Life of a Store-Bought Strand
Purchase: lights are bought in the fall, often light-duty strands made for a season or two.
Install: a ladder, a weekend and a lot of untangling. Strands are often stapled or nailed, which damages both the cord and the roof.
The season: sun, wind, rain and fog wear on thin wire. One failed bulb or connection can take out a whole section.
Takedown: lights come down in a hurry in January and go into a box in the garage.
Next fall: some strands no longer light. New ones are bought, and the old ones are thrown away.
Renting vs. Buying Christmas Lights
A full-service program changes who owns the lights and what happens to them.
Buying your own | Full-service program | |
Who supplies the lights | You buy them | We supply commercial-grade LED products |
Installation | You or a hired handyman | Our crew, with clips made for your roof |
If a section fails | You find and replace it | In-season repair is included |
After the holidays | Boxes in your garage | We take down and store everything |
Next season | Untangle, test, replace | Same look repeated, or a new design |
What gets thrown away | Failed strands | Nothing on your end |

Why Commercial-Grade LEDs Last Longer
The lights we install are commercial-grade LED products built for outdoor use, not light-duty retail strands. Connections are kept off the ground and tested when the display goes up, and failed sections are repaired during the season instead of replaced. LEDs also draw far less power than old incandescent bulbs, which matters on a display that runs every night from dusk.

What Happens to Your Lights After the Holidays
In January or February our crew takes the display down, checks it and stores it at our facility. Your design stays on file. Next fall we can repeat the same look, add a tree, change colors or update the design.
Want lights that stay up all year instead? Permanent roofline systems are a different path. Our seasonal vs. permanent guide compares the two.
If You Are Retiring Old Strands
Before throwing out old strands, check with your city or waste hauler. Many communities accept holiday lights for recycling during the season, since the copper wire can be recovered.

Christmas Light Rental FAQ
Can I rent Christmas lights instead of buying them?
Yes. Our full-service program works like a rental: we supply the lights and decor, install them, keep them working and store them after the season. You never own or store the products.
Do you keep my lights between seasons?
Yes. After takedown the display is checked and stored at our facility, and your design stays on file so the same look is simple to repeat next season.
What happens if a light fails during the season?
Call 800-791-3330. In-season repairs are part of every package, so our crew finds and fixes the failed section.
Where do you install?
Homes and businesses in Fresno, Clovis, Visalia, Tulare, Porterville, Hanford, Bakersfield and across Central California.
